FAQs
Supporting Schools, Students & Families.
Grounded was designed to help schools create more focused learning environments while maintaining open communication, student support, and thoughtful implementation. Below you'll find answers for parents, students, and administrators.
For Parents
Staying connected, staying informed.
Common questions from families about communication, safety, and how the phone-free school day works in practice.
Why is the school implementing Grounded?
+
This initiative is designed to support student success, focus, and wellbeing. By reducing phone-related distractions during the school day, students are more present in their learning, more connected with peers, and better supported by their teachers.
How can I contact my child during the day?
+
The front office remains available for communication at all times — the same trusted channel schools have relied on for decades. We recommend saving the school's main phone number so you can reach your child quickly when needed.
What happens during emergencies?
+
Student safety is the top priority. Pouches can be opened immediately by staff using an unlocking base, and students may unlock their own pouches during an emergency after speaking with administration. The front office is always available to relay urgent messages.
Can students access phones during lunch or breaks?
+
Policies vary by school. Some campuses keep pouches locked the full day, while others allow pouches to be unlocked during lunch or breaks when no instruction is taking place. Your school will share its specific policy.
Is this a punishment?
+
No. Grounded is a supportive structure — not a disciplinary one. The goal is to create a calmer, more focused learning environment where students can thrive without the constant pull of their devices.
What if my child has a medical need?
+
Schools work with families individually on documented medical accommodations — for example, students who need to monitor a health device. Please contact your school's administration to set up the appropriate plan.
What happens if a pouch is lost or damaged?
+
Schools maintain replacement pouches on-site. Lost or damaged pouches are handled through the school's standard replacement process, which administration will share with families at the start of the program.
For Students
What this looks like for you.
Straightforward answers about the pouch, your phone, and how the school day will feel.
How does the pouch work?
+
At the start of the day you place your phone inside the pouch and secure the magnetic lock. The pouch stays with you all day — in your backpack or hand — and unlocks at a magnetic base when the day ends.
Can I still bring my phone?
+
Yes. You keep your phone with you the entire day. It's just secured in the pouch so you can focus on class, your friends, and everything happening around you.
When can I access my phone?
+
You'll unlock your pouch at the end of the day. Depending on your school's policy, you may also be able to unlock it during lunch or breaks. Your school will let you know exactly when.
What if I forget my pouch?
+
Talk to a staff member — they'll help you. Schools keep spare pouches on hand so a forgotten pouch never becomes a bigger problem.
What happens if my pouch is damaged?
+
Let an administrator know and they'll get you a replacement. Pouches are durable, but normal wear happens and the school is prepared for it.
Can I unlock my pouch myself?
+
Only at the unlocking bases provided by the school, and during an emergency after speaking with administration. Otherwise, the pouch stays secured throughout the school day.
Why is the school doing this?
+
Your school wants to give you the best chance to focus, connect, and feel less overwhelmed. Phone-free time has been shown to help students feel calmer, sleep better, and enjoy school more — this is about supporting you.
For Administrators
District-ready implementation.
Operational answers for school and district leaders evaluating or rolling out the Grounded system.
How does implementation work?
+
Most schools are fully launched within 4–6 weeks. Grounded handles onboarding, staff training, parent communication templates, and ongoing support — you get a complete rollout plan, not just a product.
How many unlocking stations are needed?
+
Station counts are tailored to your enrollment, dismissal flow, and campus layout. We work with your team during onboarding to recommend placement and quantity that keep dismissal smooth.
What support does Grounded provide?
+
Full implementation support — including staff training, parent communication materials, student-facing rollout content, dedicated onboarding, and continued operational support throughout the school year.
How are emergencies handled?
+
Every staff member can open any pouch using an unlocking base. Schools establish clear emergency protocols during onboarding so administrators, teachers, and students all know exactly what to do.
How are replacements managed?
+
Schools keep a reserve of replacement pouches on-site. Grounded provides a clear replenishment process so lost or damaged pouches are handled quickly and without disruption.
Can schools begin with a pilot?
+
Yes. Many schools start with a pilot grade level or division before expanding campus-wide. We help structure the pilot so it produces meaningful data and a clear path to full implementation.
Is customization available?
+
Yes. Policies, station placement, branded materials, and parent communication can all be tailored to your school's culture and operational needs.
What rollout materials are included?
+
Parent letters, FAQ documents, staff training, signage, student assemblies, and policy templates — everything needed for a confident, district-ready launch.
